Why? Are Smart Devices Worth It?

The growth rate of smart technology is over 25% per year. The reason is that smart devices and applications are simple to use and can do things that actually are useful. Smart home automation systems can provide homeowners with three huge benefits: convenience, security, and energy efficiency. These are the early days of the technology but smart features will become standard in most homes and will protect the resale value or potential buyer interest of your home.

Smart devices can find your car keys or even your dog.

Energy Savings, Home Automation

The most common smart home renovations are controls for heating and cooling systems. Every home has controls for these essential home functions. Automating these controls reduces the need to monitor the operations and will result in significant cost savings.

Smart Home Tips for Saving Energy

Smart thermostats are one of the most familiar ways to automate the heating and cooling of your home. Energy costs related to heating and cooling are at least half of your annual costs for energy. Therefore this is an area that offers a good chance of realizing a return on your investment.

However, you still have to do the math. In my own case, my home is heated with electric baseboard heaters. Each area has a separate thermostat that controls the heater heater for that room. This allows energy savings by reducing the temperature in rooms that you are not currently using. They require manual setting but, other than remembering it is not that big a job to do. We looked into smart thermostats but we need a total of 8 thermostats to do the whole job. The time to pay back the cost of the devices and the cost of having an electrician connect them made this smart change not worthwhile.
