Ai, in various forms, has been around for a long time but in the past year, 2023, AI took a major leap into the mainstream. AI is not going away and in spite of the impressive capability to perform tasks, the current versions are the least capable AI you will ever experience.

Every business will, in the near future, need to start adapting to the impact of AI. The impact over the next 3-5 years will be exponential.

Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN 2.0)

To successfully implement AI in your processes, a business needs to understand the details of every current process in the firm. Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN 2.0) is the gold standard for accomplishing this.

The process models will highlight the details of how your products and services are delivered. The modelling diagrams will define the flow of value added steps in the process and identify waste, roadblocks and resources required.

Processes evolve and inefficiencies get built in. A review of all activities is an affordable exercise when done with the discipline of modelling methods. Eliminating waste is an immediate benefit of the exercise and saves 100% of the costs involved . Removal of delays, rework and unnecessary steps will often pay for the project even before productivity improvements have been implemented.

BPMN Integration

A BPMN diagram can now can be integrated with spreadsheets, databases, AI or automated with applications or specifically designed coded programs. These are now flowsheets that can be updated in real time and perform routine tasks automatically.

The time to start is now but there is no need to hurry. The key is to start back at the beginning and assure that all your processes are coordinated with your strategy and your plans. The AI is going to be evolving  and getting it right the first time is critical. The process modelling assures the ability to apply changes in the right place and on the right path. 

There are many “low code” platforms for BPMN. They all take a little bit of learning but the key is the thought and analysis that goes into building the models. The level of detail is critical. Enough detail to evaluate the process while maintaining the simplicity of the model to allow collaboration in your teams and the ability to train and communicate the changes.
