Windows are a Critical Choice

Windows are the key to the design of an energy-efficient custom home. Choosing the right replacement windows, in a deep retrofit project, is an equally important decision. This is because windows are the weakest link in the total heat loss of a building enclosure.

Every Canadian knows that heating costs are the biggest percentage of the total operating costs of your home in the winter. So, what do you do about it when it comes to windows? A little knowledge goes a long way in choosing your windows.

Windows and Energy Efficiency

We ask a lot from windows: energy efficiency, durability, affordability, and as importantly, architectural appeal and aesthetics. Windows and glass walls are the most distinctive features of your house and create the unique style of your home.

Glass also defines your living space from the inside out. Glass connects the inside with the outside. A homeowner does not want to build a closed box-like home with little natural lighting in the quest for energy efficiency.

However, choosing windows is really difficult and impacts how your house will look. It requires a whole lot of decisions. Windows come in various shapes and styles, alternative frame materials, and a very wide range of prices.

But, when it comes to windows and doors you get what you pay for. Our suggestion is that you should save money elsewhere. Choose your windows based on the look, features, and performance you want for your home. Your windows and doors will reconfirm your good choices every time you look outside or walk up to your own front door.

Evaluate the cost of windows as a part of your total home project budget. High-quality windows will add future value to your home and will pay you back with enhanced comfort in your living space. Comparing less expensive windows to the cost of higher quality windows is not a valid comparison.

The majority of existing houses in Canada have double pane windows. Triple pane windows are a recent addition to the market as the awareness of the need for a better heat-containing building envelop has grown. Double pane windows have a R value of around 3.5. Triple pane windows approach R6.

Regardless of design, both double and triple pane windows are still the weak link

The style is just the first step. Window frames also come in various materials such as Vinyl, Fiberglass, Wood, and Aluminum, plus combinations of these materials.
